Sunbed or cabana: which should you book?

Book a sunbed for a couple spending an afternoon, and a cabana for a group or a full day when shade and service matter.

A cabana shared by six friends can work out close to six sunbeds, depending on the terms. Ask for both quotes before deciding. What booking a private cabana involves

A private cabana at Marbela Beach Club is a shaded space by the sand, reserved for your group, with personalised service from the club team. That is the whole promise, and it is a good one on a hot day. The details that decide whether it is worth it are the ones to confirm before paying. Ask how many people the cabana covers, and whether a minimum spend on food and drinks applies. Ask when it is yours from and until, since the club opens at 11 AM and closes at 10 PM. Ask whether pool access is included for everyone in the group. A cabana also does not make the beach private. Beaches in India are public, so the sand in front of any Goa resort is shared with walkers and swimmers. Limited-time cabana deals are announced through the newsletter on the beach club page, which is worth joining a few weeks before a trip.

Is the pool at Marbela private?

No, the pool at Marbela is a shared outdoor pool next to the beach club, with its own sunbeds. It is used by resort guests and club visitors. The resort does not have private or plunge pools in its rooms, so a search for a Goa villa with its own pool will not end here. The nearest thing is the Spa Villa Room, which has a private outdoor spa area and an open-air shower, not a pool. The pool matters more than it first appears. From June to September, Drishti lifeguards fly red flags on patrolled beaches, so the pool should be the only swim of the day. Should be, because a guest who came in the 2021 monsoon wrote on Agoda that the pool was closed and many cabanas were not there. Check before visiting June–September. Even in season, the pool is the safer choice after a couple of cocktails.

When is shade worth paying for?

Shade is worth paying for from March to May, and for anyone planning to stay at the club longer than about three hours. Those pre-monsoon months are hot and humid, and the sand and sunbeds heat up quickly after late morning. A cabana turns 1 PM to 4 PM from something to endure into the laziest part of the day. November to February is milder, with dry air and cooler evenings, so couples on sunbeds under an umbrella usually manage well, especially if they arrive after lunch. Children and older relatives benefit from real shade in any month. A good compromise for a pair on a budget is timing: arrive around 3 PM, take two sunbeds near the pool, and stay through the sunset set, which falls between 6:01 PM and 7:09 PM depending on the month, per timeanddate.

A daytime plan for couples

Couples get the most from a weekday, when the choice of sunbeds is widest.

1. 12:30 PM: two sunbeds near the pool.
2. 1:30 PM: lunch at Meso: Stuffed Baby Calamari with prawns, ₹650 (listed price).
3. 3–5 PM: pool, shade, a book.
4. Sunset: cocktails from the Island Bar for the sunset set.
5. 8 PM: dinner at Meso, open until 11 PM.
