Why do so many beachfront rooms in Goa face gardens?

Because the rules and the setting push rooms back from the water. Coastal regulation in India restricts building close to the high-tide line, so beachfront properties in Goa tend to be low cottages set among palms and gardens rather than tall blocks with a balcony over the sand. Low buildings behind trees are pleasant to live in, shaded and private, but from a ground-floor verandah the sea is often heard and glimpsed rather than framed. Is a sea-facing room worth paying extra for in Goa?

For most trips, less than you'd think. Count the hours you'd spend looking at the view from the room. In the dry season you'll be on the beach or by the pool in the morning, and at sunset, the one moment everyone wants the view, you'll probably be at a table or on a sunbed near the water anyway. After dark the sea is a sound, not a picture. In the monsoon, rain and cloud often hide it. The case for paying is strongest on a slow trip where you'll read on the balcony for hours, or for a special occasion where waking to the sea is the point. Morjim faces west. The sun rises behind the resort and sets over the water, so evening is when a sea view counts. A Meso table at around 6 PM in winter, or 7 PM in May, gives most guests what they wanted from a sea-facing room, whichever room they sleep in.
