North Goa's coast splits into four belts, and each suits a different holiday. Rivers and headlands divide them, so moving between belts takes longer than the map suggests.

What does "beachfront" mean on a North Goa listing?

On a North Goa listing, "beachfront" should mean the property opens directly onto the sand, with no road between your room and the beach. In practice the words blur. "Beach-side" or "near the beach" can mean a lane, a road crossing or a short drive. "Sea view" describes what you see, not how close you are, and a hilltop room can have one without being anywhere near the water. "Private beach" is marketing, because beaches in India are public; a resort can control its own grounds and loungers, not the sand. Is it better to stay north of the Chapora river?

North of the Chapora river is better for calm and for Mopa arrivals, and worse for spontaneous nights out. Morjim, Ashwem and Mandrem sit on the far side of the estuary from Vagator and Anjuna. There is no crossing at the river mouth, so the road runs inland over the bridge at Siolim: Vagator is 25–35 minutes from Morjim and Anjuna 35–45. That is the trade. You sleep on a quieter beach and plan evenings across the river as taxi trips, or you stay in the thick of it and accept the noise. For trips of five nights or more, splitting is often the smarter plan. Two nights in a busy belt and three on a quiet one gives first-timers both sides of North Goa without daily taxi runs. Put the quiet nights last, so the trip ends rested.
