Why do Goa beach resort prices change so much?

Because almost all of Goa's demand lands in a few months. The dry season from November to February is pleasant, busy and the most expensive time of year, and its calendar is crowded: IFFI in late November, the Feast of St Francis Xavier on 3 December, Goa Liberation Day on 19 December, then Christmas and New Year, the busiest week of all. From March to May the heat thins the crowds. From June to September the monsoon brings heavy rain, red flags on every beach and lower rates, and October sits in between as shacks reopen. A beach resort prices each night against that demand, which is why Marbela's rates change daily and tariffs can move without notice. Any rupee figure printed on a blog, including this one, would be wrong within days. What else moves the price of the same room?

At Marbela Beach Resort, four things change the bill once the date is fixed. The first is the room category. Spa Villa Rooms, the newest and most indulgent, come with a private outdoor spa area and open-air shower, while Villa Rooms keep things simpler with a garden-view balcony or verandah. The second is inclusions: breakfast comes with some room types and packages and not others, so two rates for the same room can differ for that reason alone. The third is who is travelling. Children up to 6 stay free without an extra bed, but anyone above 12 is charged as an adult at ₹2,360 per night with an extra mattress. The fourth is timing within your stay. Weekends and long weekends cost more than midweek, early check-in before 2 PM is extra, and New Year guests can't check out on 31 December, which makes a New Year stay at least one night longer than some people plan.

The costs you can put in a budget today

Several costs around the room are published or well known, so a realistic trip budget is possible before you have a room rate. The figures below are approximate or as listed and may change.

A worked example: two adults, two nights, flying into Mopa. Budget the room at the live rate, ₹2,000–3,000 for taxis, and ₹2,450 for one seafood dinner (the platter plus the calamari and prawns) before drinks.

Is Goa expensive for a luxury holiday?

Goa is expensive for a luxury holiday on peak dates and far more reasonable outside them. The room is where the money goes. Over Christmas and New Year, beachfront rooms across North Goa are at their dearest and the best categories sell first. The same room in March, or a weekday in early November, can look like a different product on price. Day-to-day spending at a beach resort is easier to predict. • Match the room category name exactly. A "cottage" on one site may be a different room on another.
• Check whether breakfast and taxes are in the figure shown.
