Is Morjim or Anjuna the better beach?

Neither wins outright. Morjim is the better beach to be on, and Anjuna the better place to be around, so the answer turns on who is travelling.

What is Anjuna Beach like?

Anjuna Beach is rocky, social and shaped by its history. It has been on the traveller map for decades, first as a hippie stop and later for trance parties, and that reputation still draws a crowd to its cafés, bars and guesthouses. The shoreline is broken up by laterite outcrops, the sand is narrower than on the long beaches north of the river, and rocks run into the sea in several places, so pick your entry point carefully and swim only between the lifeguards' flags. Sunset from the rocks is the classic Anjuna moment, with the cliffs running north towards Vagator. The Anjuna Flea Market, which Goa Tourism lists for Wednesdays, runs in season from about late October, roughly 10 AM to sunset: clothes, jewellery, spices, handicrafts and hard bargaining. Anjuna works for people who like noise and company. On party nights, sound carries.

What is Morjim like next to Anjuna?

Morjim Beach is long, flat and sandy, and it gives you room. It lies on the northern bank of the Chapora river estuary, so from its southern end you look across the water to Chapora Fort and Vagator. The water stays shallow for some distance near the shore, though tides and currents still change, and Drishti lifeguards mark the swim zone with red-and-yellow flags. Part of the beach is a protected Olive Ridley turtle nesting site managed by the Goa Forest Department, and from late December to March lights and music on the sand at night are discouraged. Evenings are about dinner and a drink by the sea, with beach clubs but no party strip, and most people are in bed well before Anjuna's crowd heads out. A Wednesday from each base

The Wednesday flea market shows the difference between the two bases better than any table.

• Staying in Anjuna: walk to the market mid-morning, go back for a break at lunch, return for the late-afternoon crowd and stay on for sunset and a bar.
• Staying in Morjim: leave around 9:30 AM by cab or scooter, cross the Siolim bridge and reach the market in about 35–45 minutes. Shop before the midday heat, head back by mid-afternoon, and be on Morjim's sand for sunset, which falls roughly between 6:00 PM and 7:10 PM depending on the month.

Staying close to Anjuna without the noise

Staying in Morjim and visiting Anjuna is the usual compromise, and it works for people who want one or two Anjuna evenings rather than seven. Marbela Beach Resort sits on Morjim Beach with direct access to the sand, 35–45 minutes from Anjuna by road (approx.). Afternoons can still be social: the beach club has sunbeds, private cabanas, a pool and house music, with DJ sets at sunset, until it closes at 10 PM. Meso restaurant serves coastal Mediterranean and Middle Eastern food until 11 PM. The trade-offs are plain. Every Anjuna night out needs a cab both ways, there's no resort shuttle, and most rooms face the gardens rather than the sea. Clubbing four nights out of five?
